AI use in applications and interviews at Aberdeen
Please note: Aberdeen will never ask candidates to pay for recruitment services, applications, interviews or job opportunities. If you are contacted by someone claiming to represent Aberdeen and requesting payment, please treat this as suspicious and contact us directly to verify the communication. Please be aware that we do not conduct professional outreach, recruitment activity, or business correspondence through personal email accounts.
Our expectations
At Aberdeen, we are committed to creating a recruitment process that is fair, transparent and focused on identifying potential. We want to understand your unique skills, experiences, motivations and aspirations, and we expect all candidates to participate in the recruitment process with honesty and integrity.
The information you provide throughout your application should be an accurate reflection of your experience, qualifications and capabilities. Misrepresenting your skills, achievements or experience, whether directly, with the assistance of another individual, or with technology or artificial intelligence (AI), may result in your application being withdrawn from the recruitment process.
We recognise that AI tools are becoming part of everyday life and work. Whilst AI can be a useful support tool, it should not replace your own judgement, experiences or authentic voice during the recruitment process. This reflects Aberdeen’s approach to AI, using technology to support human decision-making.
Using AI during the recruitment process
Our aim is to get to know the real you. If you choose to use AI tools during your application journey, we ask that you do so responsibly and in line with the guidance below.
CVs, resumes and application forms
AI can be helpful for checking spelling, grammar and structure, or helping you present your experience clearly. However, all content submitted must genuinely reflect your own skills, qualifications and experience.
Candidates remain responsible for ensuring all information provided is accurate and truthful.
Aberdeen will never ask candidates to pay for recruitment services, applications, interviews or job opportunities. If you are contacted by someone claiming to represent Aberdeen and requesting payment, please treat this as suspicious and contact us directly to verify the communication.
Interview preparation
We encourage candidates to prepare thoroughly and to make use of appropriate resources, including AI tools, when appropriate.
Acceptable uses may include, but aren’t limited to:
- Researching the Aberdeen business.
- Practising interview questions.
- Reviewing industry trends and market developments.
- Receiving feedback on communication style or presentation skills.
Whilst preparation is encouraged, we expect candidates to develop their own understanding, opinions and responses.
Virtual and in-person interviews
Our interviews are designed to assess your experiences, strengths, motivations and potential.
During interviews, we ask that responses come directly from you and reflect your own thinking, experiences and judgement. We do not permit the use of AI tools to generate live answers during interviews unless explicitly stated as part of the assessment.
For virtual interviews, candidates should participate independently and ensure any responses provided are their own.
Assessments and assessment centres
From time to time, certain exercises may involve the use of AI tools as part of the assessment. Where this is relevant, candidates will be provided with clear instructions about how AI may or may not be used.
In some cases, we may be interested in understanding how candidates use AI responsibly, how they evaluate outputs, and how they apply their own judgement to AI-generated information.
Unless specifically instructed otherwise, candidates should assume that assessments are intended to demonstrate their own capabilities, knowledge and potential.
Authenticity matters
Our priority is to understand your authentic strengths and potential. We value critical thinking, curiosity, learning agility and sound judgement just as much as technical knowledge.
Applications and assessments that do not accurately represent a candidate's own abilities may result in disqualification from the recruitment process.
As part of our recruitment process, we may verify qualifications, employment history and other relevant information through references and background checks where appropriate.
Support and reasonable adjustments
Aberdeen is committed to providing an inclusive recruitment experience.
If you require reasonable adjustments or additional support at any stage of the recruitment process, please speak with your recruiter or contact the recruitment team. We will work with you to ensure you can participate fully and perform at your best.
How Aberdeen uses AI in recruitment
At Aberdeen, we are exploring how AI can enhance the recruitment experience while maintaining human oversight and accountability. Consistent with our AI policy, AI supports rather than replaces human judgement in hiring decisions.
AI may be used to assist with activities such as:
- Drafting and refining job advertisements.
- Supporting candidate communications.
- Assisting recruiters and hiring managers with interview preparation.
- Summarising interview notes or recruitment discussions where appropriate.
We do not use AI to make hiring decisions on our behalf. Recruitment decisions remain the responsibility of our recruiters and hiring managers, who assess candidates using structured and consistent processes. Aberdeen's approach remains human-led and values focused, with accountability for hiring outcomes resting with people, not technology.
